Learning to Use Technology Can Have Many Benefits!

While some older adults may be reluctant to learn how to use digital technology, studies show more seniors are feeling comfortable with it. For incidence, the number of adults aged 65 years and older who own smartphones has risen 24 percentage points (up from 18% to 42%) since 2013. However that number is considerably lower for adults in their mid-70s and older. Smartphone adoption drops off considerably among adults in their mid-70s and beyond. The amount of senior from 75 to 79 who own a smartphone is only 31%, and for those 80 and older it is only 17%.

In terms of the Internet, seniors use has risen steadily over the last decade and a half. The Pew Research Center first began tracking Internet adoption in early 2000, and at that time “just 14% of seniors were internet users.” They report that today, “67% of adults ages 65 and older say they go online.” Technology is also being used to monitor and manage the health status of seniors.

Some seniors say the Internet helps them to feel more capable and connected to the wider community as well as to their family and friends. Messages can be sent instantly and a senior can see their loved ones’ faces using FaceTime or Skype.

In addition technology can be informative and entertaining and offers plenty of ways to keep minds active and engaged. At our MorningStar of Rio Rancho community, we will offer resort-style amenities and services as well as a wide range of wellness programs and activities. We will also offer iN2L Technology, which is designed to help residents stay active and connected. The state-of-the-art system combines touchscreen computers with intuitive, picture-based software. Its library contains 3,000 choices for social and spiritual connection, intellectual and physical stimulation, emotional support and vocational interests.

Don’t Underestimate the Benefits of Companionship

As we reach our senior years, research indicates socialization is more important than ever. In fact a recent Harvard University study shows that “elderly individuals, who had active social lives, were happier, healthier and more likely to live longer, than elderly people who did not have an active social life.” Results suggest that “loneliness can deter an elderly person’s life, while socializing can enrich it.”

Seniors who regularly socialize are less likely to become depressed and are better-equipped to get help if they experience mental health problems. Also older adults with a variety of social support are more likely to regularly exercise, which has been shown to keep the mind active and help slow down memory loss as well as improve overall health. In addition strong social support can help maintain a senior’s self-esteem and sense of worth.

As we socialize, our brains are mentally engaged, which improves our cognitive functions and may prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. Activities we do with friends can be fun and stimulate our mind such as playing cards, Bingo, and word or trivia games as well as something as simple as carrying on a conversation.

As the newest senior housing in Rio Rancho, MorningStar of Rio Rancho will offer 51 private assisted living suites and 26 secure suites devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Our beautiful residential home will have plenty of common areas to sit and relax in or enjoy a pleasant conversation with a friend. To keep residents entertained or as busy as they want to be, our monthly calendar will be loaded with a wide range of activities and wellness programs including daily exercise classes, games, live entertainment and special events. If you are interested in learning more, please visit our website or stop by our onsite Information Center.

Individualized Care from Dementia Care Specialists

It is hard to believe MorningStar at Englefield Green recently celebrated our first-year anniversary as it seems like yesterday that we were opening our doors to welcome residents to their new home.  During the past year, we have been proud to bring the Boise, Idaho area specialized dementia care designed to connect with and nurture the individual regardless of the extent of the memory loss.  Furthermore our unique community was designed to allow residents the freedom to explore their expansive surroundings safely and easily.

When a family comes to MorningStar at Englefield Green looking for care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, our experienced team is ready to help.  Even before we welcome a new resident to our loving community, we take the time to sit down with them and their family to learn as much as we can about the person including their medical history, background, talents, and personal preferences.  We then use this information to create an individualized care plan that is used to stimulate or calm a resident in response to a particular mood or situation.

Also we use a reimagined philosophy and approach to dementia care we call “Lavender Sky, which we consider to be the next logical step to what MorningStar has always believed and aspired to be as dementia care specialists.  The comprehensive program allows us to introduce a more insightful and intentional way to support the memory-impaired and their families.  Moreover as it guides every aspects of our dementia care, all team members (regardless of the positions they hold at Englefield) are asked to attend eight-hours of interactive Lavender Sky training to help give them a better understanding of the disease.

MorningStar at Englefield Green feels privileged to offer area families trusted dementia care.  Our community has 50 secure suites in a variety of floor plans for both permanent and short-term residents.  Please contact us to learn more about one of Boise’s most loving, experienced Alzheimer’s care homes.

Trust Your Loved One to the Dementia Care Specialists

When MorningStar of Rio Rancho opens next spring, we will provide 26 secure suites devoted to the care of seniors with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases, in addition to our 51 private assisted living suites. Our Reflections Neighborhood is designed to encourage and support residents’ independence as much as possible, while providing individualized memory care that stimulates or calms as the situation requires.

At MorningStar our approach to memory care is designed around our comprehensive program we call “Lavender Sky.” Our reimagined philosophy encourages us to walk alongside a resident as we thoughtfully enter, embrace and explore the world of dementia. With insight and intentionality, we enter into our memory-impaired residents’ “purple world” to cross over the physical and emotional boundaries that would otherwise separate us. We also educate the families of those afflicted with Alzheimer’s on how to follow our lead and enter too.

Another important aspect of our unique methodology is to accept the diagnosis of dementia and embrace the fact (we know it is difficult) that this is the path we must take together. By embracing a deep understanding of the disease, it allows us to embrace the necessary changes in our own communication style as well as physically embrace residents with the power of touch. And most importantly we embrace hope.

Finally, Lavender Sky explores a boundless variety of resourceful and individualized solutions for we recognize that what works today may not work tomorrow. When memory care residents come to MorningStar of Rio Rancho, we explore the person’s life including their background, interest and preferences to create a specialized care plan. We also explore ways to engage and involve their family members.

As you can see, memory care in Rio Rancho’s newest senior living community springs from a deep understanding of the disease and is offered with the utmost love and compassion. Please stop by our onsite Information center at the northwest corner of Westside Boulevard and Golf Course Road or give us a call.

10 Common Signs and Symptoms of Alzheimer’s

While we have all heard a lot about Alzheimer’s and may even know someone suffering from the disease, we may not be aware of the common signs and symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s. Many people think that forgetting things is a sign of Alzheimer’s, while others too readily accept certain symptoms of Alzheimer’s as just getting older.

The Alzheimer’s Association has a website full of useful information and resources for families dealing with the disease and publishes a list of the 10 Early Signs and Symptoms of Alzheimer's. One of the first signs they say is a symptom of Alzheimer’s is not occasional forgetfulness but forgetfulness that disrupts daily life. For example the person is having problems retaining recently learned information and trouble remembering important dates or events, or they are asking the same questions over and over again.

People in the early stages of Alzheimer’s may have more difficulty doing things they used to do easily such as paying bills or following recipes. Even driving to well-known locations or remembering the rules of a favorite game can be troublesome. Other signs include feeling confused about the passage of time and finding it harder and harder to keep track of dates, time and seasons.

Experiencing vision problems such as judging distances and determining color or contrast as well as problems following or partaking in a conversation are also common signs of the disease. Other signs can include changes in personality and mood, and withdrawing from social activities the person used to enjoy.

For the full listing and description of the 10 Common Signs of Alzheimer’s, please visit the Alzheimer’s Association website. If a loved one has Alzheimer’s, we encourage you to learn more about MorningStar of Rio Rancho, the newest assisted living and memory care in Rio Rancho. MorningStar Proudly Welcomes Veterans

Throughout all of MorningStar’s communities, we are privileged to have veterans from all five branches of military service call us home. We are extremely proud of their courage, dedication and self-sacrifice and grateful for everything they did to help keep us free.

Whenever we hear that veterans or families of vets are interested in our community, we are pleased to direct them to local resources that can help to ease and quicken the application process for “Aid & Attendance”. This is a monthly benefit payment allocated by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs to certain wartime veterans and their survivors who qualify for financial need and have a doctor’s order for regular assistance with daily living activities.

Additional qualifications for the vets include having served at least 90 days of active duty, of which at least one day was spent serving during a period of a foreign war. Also, the vet must not have been dishonorably discharged. The Aid & Attendance benefit does not require the vet to have served overseas, seen combat or retired from the military. For surviving spouses to be eligible for the benefit, they must have been married to the vet at the time of their death and never remarried.

We encourage you to contact us to learn more about applying for the benefit. MorningStar of Fountain Hills offers the area’s best assisted living and memory care with the goal to make your retirement years as carefree as possible. Visit our website to set up a tour of our beautiful community.

Alzheimer’s Disease Increases the Risk of Falling

Recently a report in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, noted that while falls are extremely common in seniors 65 years of age and older, individuals with Alzheimer are at an even greater risk.  Statistics show that approximately one in three seniors fall each year.  In those with Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia, the “rate is more than doubled in those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia: 70 percent of those with dementia experience at least one fall each year.”

Researchers say there are several reasons for this including gait and balance issues as well as problems concentrating and with staying focused on the task at hand.  Another reason for a fall is certain medications that can cause drowsiness.  Whatever the reason, falling can be a big problem for seniors who live alone and have cognition issues as they may not have access to help when they need it.

At MorningStar at Englefield Green, our loving dementia care community is designed to address the unique needs of our most tender residents to ensure their safety and comfort.  Furthermore as one of the area’s leading dementia care specialists, our community was designed from the ground up to provide a secure setting, which allows residents to explore their spacious surroundings freely and easily.  Our specialized care includes finding ways to connect with and nurture the essence of the individual, and to celebrate and elevate life.

MorningStar of Fountain Hills offers Assisted Living at Its Finest

When searching for senior living options, many people are not entirely sure what the term “assisted living” means. We will try and clarify. One of the first things to know is assisted living is not just another word for a nursing home. Nor does it offer the same level of care and typically is not as expensive.

What is assisted living? Assisted living is designed for seniors who want to retain their independence but require some assistance with daily personal care activities. While not all assisted living communities are the same in terms of the level of care, typically assisted living provides services for activities like bathing and dressing as well as prepared meals.

At assisted living communities such as MorningStar of Fountain Hills, we create individualized care plans for each resident after talking with them and their family. Furthermore, during the course of your stay, your care plan will be regularly reviewed to ensure it addresses your needs. Also, regardless of the level of care, all residents receive the assurance of having 24/7 onsite Care Managers who help to ensure their safety and meet their every need.

As a resident of MorningStar, you will get three daily meals that are meticulously prepared largely from scratch by our Executive Chef. Each meal is both nutritional and delicious and we modify recipes to address a number of different dietary restrictions including low sodium or low fat, sugar-free, no sugar, and vegetarian options.

In addition, our assisted living residents have the opportunity to participate in a range of activities and programs that are designed to promote physical, intellectual and spiritual wellness. Please visit our website for contact information to learn more about MorningStar of Fountain Hills.

Cataract Surgery is Common for Seniors

A cataract is the clouding of the lens inside the eye causing blurred or tinted vision, seeing double, impaired night vision, and extra sensitivity to light. The vision loss from cataracts happens slowly over time and cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses or with corneal refractive surgery such as Lasik. Cataracts are typically an age-related disease, and according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, “cataracts affect more than 24.4 million Americans age 40 and older. By age 75, approximately half of all Americans have cataracts.”

Cataract removal is one of the most common operations in the US. The surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, and while cataract surgery may sound scary, most people get excellent results. During surgery, the affected lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). The procedure has been improved over the last several years by the use of a high-frequency ultrasound device, which has resulted in faster healing times and less complications.

Before you have the surgery, your ophthalmologist will perform tests on your eye to determine if you have any risk factors as well as what size and type of IOL will give you the best outcome. You will also have input into the type of IOL you want to get that will depend on your needs and personal preferences. One type of lens is an advanced presbyopia-correcting IOL that improves your reading vision without interfering with your distance vision.

The actual procedure typically takes about 15 minutes but you will be there for a couple of hours to get prepped and a small recovery period afterward. Your doctor may have you wear an eye patch for a short time, and you should expect your vision to be distorted for at least a few days. Other common issues include feeling as if your eye is dry and itchy but you will be advised to not scratch or rub it. Doctors also recommend if you choose to wear glasses after surgery, you pick lenses with anti-reflective coating or photochromic lenses.

At MorningStar of Fountain Hills, we exemplify the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve…all of which contributes to creating a true home for residents amid a beautiful, serene setting. Memory Care Dining is About Nutrition and Community

The Alzheimer’s Association explains that many people suffering from Alzheimer’s may be “overwhelmed with too many food choices, forget to eat or have difficulty with eating utensils.” This can be a problem as we know healthy eating is especially important for those with dementia and that poor nutrition can result in weight loss and increase behavioral symptoms.

This is why in addition to the many aspects of MorningStar of Fountain Hill’s memory care; we take our residents’ nutritional concerns very seriously. One of the things we do to encourage our tender memory care residents to eat is to make dining as much about Community as it is about nutrition. At mealtime, team members sit with residents to help make meal time an enjoyable, shared experience. We also regularly serve meals family-style on platters and serving bowls to prompt residents to connect with memories of meals they have eaten or prepared during their lives. Family members are invited to join us at any time.

As our Reflections Neighborhood’s team is extremely experienced in caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, we know it is important to serve foods that taste as good as they look. Furthermore, we understand some residents’ abilities at the table may be compromised, which is why we also serve finger foods; mechanical soft and puréed, thickened liquids; and easy-to-recognize balanced meals. If the best option for your loved one is to eat pureed meat and vegetables, we offer elegant dishes that are both beautifully plated and purely delicious.

Please visit our website to learn more about our exceptional assisted living and memory care community.

The Rate of Increases in Alzheimer’s May be Slowing

Although it is estimated that over 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and that the number will triple in the coming decades, experts are giving us some reasons to hope.  Recently reported results from a large study show that while cases of Alzheimer’s are still increasing at an all-time rate, the increase appears to be slowing.

The new research suggests “higher levels of education and heart-healthy lifestyle measures may be helping to perhaps prevent, or at least delay, the onset of dementia.”  So as researchers race to find a cure for Alzheimer’s, the study is another indication that people can make specific changes in their lifestyle to help delay the onset of Alzheimer’s.

Recently published in The New England Journal of Medicine, the findings are part of the Framingham Heart Study and included 5,200 participants.  One of the study’s authors, Dr. Sudha Seshadri, a professor of neurology at Boston University School of Medicine, says she hopes effective preventive measures will lessen the estimated increase in the number of people affected with the disease in the coming decades.

This study provides the best evidence to date to suggest better education and improvements in heart health may be staving off dementia.  Researchers studied risk factors such as smoking, obesity, high blood pressure and levels of education and found the biggest declines were in those who took better control of their cardiovascular health.  Vascular dementia had the highest decline but researchers also saw declines in Alzheimer’s; however, they noted many people with Alzheimer’s also have signs of vascular dementia.

To summarize the study, researchers explain a healthier lifestyle appears to be an important part of Alzheimer’s prevention and includes eating well, challenging the brain, and participating in regular physical activity.  A healthier lifestyle also offers the benefit of increased energy levels and better thinking skills in old age.

Please visit our MorningStar at Englefield Green’s website to learn more about our dedicated and compassionate dementia care community.  We consider it an honor to walk alongside the memory-impaired (and their families) on this unexpected journey.

MorningStar Provides Help with the Activities of Daily Living

We know that seniors value their independence and that many are reluctant to let families and friends know they may need more help. Often older adults fear they may become a burden or worry their family. However, experts advise that even if your parent is not expressing a need for more help, there are signs to look for that indicate they need it.

Michael Perskin, a geriatrician at NYU Langone Health explains that, “Sometimes you’re shocked when you visit.” He adds it is troubling if “you walk into a parent’s house and the bathrooms are dirty or there’s no food in the refrigerator.” Other signs include weight loss and a general decline in their appearance. Often older adults in need of more care can no longer safely bath themselves and their health problems can make dressing difficult.

Driving can also become a problem for seniors and evidence of scrapes and dents on their car may indicate they should not be driving anymore. For other seniors, failing eyesight can make driving at night or in rainy or snowy weather difficult and can result in missed doctor appointments or not being able to buy groceries and run errands.

At MorningStar of Fountain Hills, our expertise is to fill in the gaps and provide the level of care you or your loved needs. We offer a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community that includes three daily nutritional meals, the opportunity to participate in a range of activities and wellness programs, and to enjoy ready-made companionship.

To ensure the safety and wellbeing of our residents, we have 24/7 care managers, a full-time nurse, suites equipped with handicapped-accessible bathrooms and emergency call systems. We encourage you to visit our website and use our online form to set up a tour of our gorgeous, loving community.
