Celebrate Grandparents Day on September 8th

To recognize the value of the relationship between grandchildren and grandparents, “Grandparents Day” is celebrated on the Sunday after Labor Day. While not a public holiday, President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation in 1978 stating it should be observed each year.

For kids, having more people involved in their lives other than their parents is a good thing. Many grandparents’ unconditional love brings with it acceptance, patience and unwavering support as they readily recognize the child’s accomplishments and provides a safe, trusted harbor. Several studies validate the love and emotional closeness grandparents provide can make a positive impact on a child’s healthy development. Moreover, as grandparents may be retired, they have more leisure time to spend with the grandkids.

Research also shows that a close, involved relationship is good for grandparents too, and contributes to a healthier, happier and possibly even longer life. Grandparents’ relationship with grandkids can include the role of caregiver, teacher, playmate and cheering squad depending on where they live; and does not come with the responsibilities of being the parent. Grandparents can uniquely provide the child with a sense of their family history, heritage, and identity. They know great stories about the child’s parents and can help pass on family traditions and life stories.

If your child does not have any grandparents, consider adopting an elderly person who does not have grandchildren. If you don’t know any senior citizens personally, call a senior community in your area and ask if they have activities where your child would be welcome. If you missed last year’s Grandparents Day, put it on the calendar and celebrate it with some of your favorite seniors this year.

The Benefits of Staying Social as You Age

As the saying goes, "A joyful heart is the best medicine." At our senior living community, we see firsthand how staying socially active brings joy and vitality to life. The connections we make with others are not just nice to have; they're essential for our well-being. Let's explore the delightful benefits of staying social as you age.

Boosting Mental Health

Social interactions can have a profound impact on mental health. Engaging with friends and participating in group activities can help reduce feelings of loneliness and depression. In our community, we often see how laughter and conversation brighten the days of residents. Whether it's a chat over morning coffee or a spirited game of cards, these interactions provide a sense of purpose and belonging.

Keeping the Mind Sharp

Engaging in social activities is like exercise for the brain. Discussing current events, sharing stories, and playing games all stimulate cognitive function. In assisted living facilities Rio Rancho, we organize trivia nights and book clubs that encourage residents to think critically and creatively. It’s incredible to see how these gatherings spark lively discussions and help keep our minds sharp.

Enhancing Physical Health

Believe it or not, staying social can also improve physical health. Activities such as dancing, walking groups, or fitness classes offer a fun way to stay active. When you’re having fun with friends, it hardly feels like exercise. Many residents find that participating in group activities increases their motivation to stay active and healthy.

Building a Support Network

Having a strong support network is invaluable as we age. Friends offer encouragement, companionship, and assistance when needed. A resident once shared how her book club friends rallied around her during a challenging time, providing both emotional support and practical help. It’s these connections that turn our community into a family.

Learning New Skills

Staying social opens up opportunities to learn new skills and try new hobbies. Whether it’s taking up painting, learning a new language, or joining a cooking class, social activities expose us to new experiences. At our senior living community, we’ve seen residents discover hidden talents and passions that bring joy and excitement to their lives.

Fostering Happiness

Above all, staying social fosters happiness. Sharing experiences, celebrating achievements, and enjoying the company of others bring immense joy. The simple act of connecting with others can lift our spirits and add a sense of fulfillment to our days.

Conclusion

Staying socially active is key to a vibrant and fulfilling life as we age. Whether you’re joining a club, attending events, or simply chatting with a neighbor, these interactions enrich our lives in countless ways. In our community, we believe in the power of connection to enhance well-being and happiness. So, embrace the opportunity to meet new people, try new things, and enjoy the company of friends. Life is better when shared with others.

Hosting a Summer BBQ: Tips for Seniors

There’s something magical about a summer BBQ—the sizzle of the grill, the laughter of friends and family, and the aroma of delicious food filling the air. Whether you live in your own home or a senior living community, hosting a BBQ can be a delightful way to enjoy the season. Here are some tips to ensure your BBQ is fun, safe, and stress-free.

Plan Ahead

Menu Planning

Think about what you and your guests enjoy eating. Classic BBQ fare like burgers, hot dogs, and ribs are always a hit, but why not mix it up with some grilled veggies or a refreshing fruit salad? Planning your menu in advance helps you stay organized and ensures you have all the ingredients you need.

Create a Shopping List

Once you’ve decided on your menu, make a detailed shopping list. Include everything from meats and marinades to drinks and disposable plates. This way, you won’t have to make last-minute trips to the store.

Setting Up

Comfortable Seating

Make sure you have plenty of comfortable seating for your guests. If you’re in an area with limited shade, set up umbrellas or a canopy to keep everyone cool. And if you’re in one of the assisted living facilities in Rio Rancho, the staff can help you arrange a comfortable and accessible space.

Accessibility

Ensure the BBQ area is easily accessible for all your guests. Clear any obstacles that might cause someone to trip, and make sure pathways are wide enough for wheelchairs or walkers.

Food and Drinks

Prepping Food

Do as much prep work as possible the day before. Marinate the meats, chop the veggies, and prepare the salads. This way, you’ll have more time to enjoy with your guests on the day of the BBQ.

Stay Hydrated

Keep plenty of drinks on hand. Water, iced tea, and lemonade are great choices. If you’re serving alcohol, make sure to have non-alcoholic options available as well. Staying hydrated is crucial, especially in the summer heat.

Entertainment

Music and Activities

Set up a playlist of your favorite tunes to keep the mood lively. If you have a smart speaker, guests can even request songs. Simple games like cornhole or a trivia quiz can keep everyone entertained and engaged.

Safety Tips

Sun Protection

Provide sunscreen and insect repellent for your guests. Place these essentials on a table where everyone can access them easily. Remind guests to reapply sunscreen as needed.

Grill Safety

Keep the grill away from seating areas to prevent accidents. Have a fire extinguisher nearby, just in case. If children are present, make sure they understand that the grill is off-limits and have an adult supervise the grilling.

Enjoy Yourself

Relax and Have Fun

Hosting a BBQ should be fun, not stressful. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from family or friends. Accept offers to bring side dishes or desserts. Most importantly, take time to relax and enjoy the company of your guests. After all, the best part of a BBQ is the time spent together, creating incredible memories.

Hosting a summer BBQ can be a fantastic way to connect with loved ones and enjoy the season. With some planning and these helpful tips, you can ensure a safe, fun, and memorable event in senior living. So fire up the grill, gather your friends and family, and have a fantastic BBQ!

Happy grilling!

Healthy Eating on a Budget: Nutritious Meals for Seniors

Eating well doesn't have to break the bank, especially for our senior living community. With some planning and smart choices, it's possible to enjoy nutritious meals that support overall health without spending too much. Here are some tips and ideas to help you eat healthy on a budget in assisted living Fountain Hills.

Plan Your Meals

Planning is vital to saving money while maintaining a nutritious diet. Create a weekly meal plan and make a shopping list before heading to the store. This way, you'll avoid impulse purchases and can focus on buying only what you need.

Buy in Bulk

Buying in bulk can save money in the long run. Look for bulk options for staples like rice, beans, oats, and pasta. These items have a long shelf life and can be used in a variety of dishes.

Choose Seasonal Produce

Seasonal fruits and vegetables are often cheaper and fresher. Visit local farmers' markets or look for seasonal produce at your grocery store. Not only will you save money, but you'll also enjoy the freshest flavors.

Cook at Home

Preparing meals at home is generally more cost-effective than eating out. It also allows you to control the ingredients and portions. Try batch cooking and freezing individual portions for days when you don't feel like cooking.

Affordable and Nutritious Meal Ideas:

  1. Vegetable Stir-Fry: Use a mix of seasonal vegetables, tofu, or chicken and a simple sauce made from soy sauce, garlic, and ginger. Serve with brown rice for a complete meal.
  2. Hearty Soups: Soups are a great way to use up leftover vegetables and are easy to make in large batches. Try making a lentil soup with carrots, celery, and onions or a chicken vegetable soup with whatever veggies you have on hand.
  3. Whole Grain Salads: Combine cooked quinoa or brown rice with fresh vegetables, beans, and a light dressing. Add some grilled chicken or tofu for extra protein.
  4. Overnight Oats: Mix oats with milk or yogurt and sit in the fridge overnight. In the morning, add fresh fruit, nuts, and a drizzle of honey for a nutritious breakfast.
  5. Baked Potatoes: Top a baked potato with cottage cheese, steamed broccoli, and a sprinkle of cheddar cheese for a simple and satisfying meal.

Shopping Smart

Look for sales and use coupons to save money on groceries. Store brands are often just as good as name brands and can be significantly cheaper. Don't forget to check the lower shelves for less expensive items that might be overlooked at eye level.

Staying Hydrated

Water is the best choice for staying hydrated, and it's free! Try to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Herbal teas are also a good option and can be enjoyed hot or cold.

In our senior living Scottsdale community, we've seen how eating well can make a big difference in how you feel day-to-day. By making thoughtful choices and planning ahead, it's possible to enjoy nutritious, delicious meals without overspending. We're here to support you in making healthy eating an easy and enjoyable part of your life. Together, we can savor the benefits of a well-balanced diet while sticking to a budget.

Volunteering: Giving Back and Gaining More in Your Senior Years

Volunteering in senior years is a pathway to not only giving back to the community but also enhancing one’s own life. It provides a sense of purpose, the joy of connecting with others, and the satisfaction of making a difference. For residents in assisted living and assisted living Fountain Hills, along with those in senior living Scottsdale, engaging in volunteer work can offer numerous benefits, from improved mental health to increased physical activity. Here’s a closer look at how seniors can enrich their lives through volunteering.

1. A Sense of Purpose and Accomplishment

Transitioning into retirement can leave some seniors searching for ways to feel useful and productive. Volunteering offers that opportunity, allowing individuals to contribute their skills and knowledge in meaningful ways. Whether it's mentoring the younger generation, participating in community beautification projects, or providing companionship to those in need, the work done through volunteering brings a deep sense of purpose and accomplishment, values that are highly regarded in communities like assisted living Fountain Hills and senior living Scottsdale.

2. Social Connections and Community

Isolation can be a challenge in senior years, but volunteering creates avenues for social interaction and community building. Working alongside others towards a common goal fosters friendships and connections, reducing feelings of loneliness. Assisted living communities often organize group volunteer activities, making it easier for residents to get involved and stay connected.

3. Mental and Physical Health Benefits

The act of volunteering has been linked to various health benefits. It can reduce stress, combat depression, and keep the mind engaged, contributing to better mental health. Physical activities involved in certain types of volunteer work can also help keep seniors active, supporting their physical health. Facilities in senior living Scottsdale and assisted living Fountain Hills encourage volunteering as part of a healthy lifestyle for seniors.

4. Lifelong Learning and Skill Development

Volunteering offers endless opportunities for learning and personal growth. Seniors can explore new interests, develop new skills, and even share their expertise with others. This aspect of volunteering is especially appealing for those in assisted living, who often have more time to pursue new learning opportunities.

5. Enhancing Self-Esteem

Helping others through volunteer work can significantly boost self-esteem and confidence. Seniors who volunteer often report feeling more positive about themselves and their abilities to contribute positively to society. This boost in self-esteem is something that assisted living Fountain Hills and senior living Scottsdale aim to foster among their residents.

Volunteering in senior years is a rewarding experience that offers far more than just the satisfaction of giving back. It brings purpose, connections, health benefits, opportunities for learning, and a sense of self-worth. For those in assisted living, assisted living Fountain Hills, and senior living Scottsdale, there are numerous ways to get involved and make a meaningful impact, proving that one is never too old to contribute to their community and enrich their own lives in the process.

Tips to Accurately Take Your Blood Pressure at Home

Many of us have had our blood pressure taken at the doctor’s office and were surprised when it turned out to be higher than we expected it to be. If this has happened to you, you may be experiencing something known as “white-coat hypertension,” meaning a higher than warranted reading during a medical appointment.

Doctors say one of the best ways to ensure you do not have elevated blood pressure, is to take your blood pressure at home a number of times. You may also be asked by your healthcare provider to track your blood pressure to see if you should be put on medication or adjust medication to reach a target number.

It is important to do it correctly to ensure readings are accurate. Experts say start by buying a validated monitor and do not buy one that uses the finger or wrist as they are not as accurate as upper-arm cuffs. If you have a much smaller or larger upper-arm, look for one appropriately sized.

Other things to consider are to not take your blood pressure when you are stressed and to wait at least 30 minutes after eating, smoking or exercising. Odd as it sounds you will get a more accurate reading if you empty your bladder right beforehand. Sit comfortably with feet flat on the floor and support your arm near heart height. Now wait a few minutes. A good strategy for a true representation of BP is to take 4 readings a day for 7 days - twice in the morning and twice at night. Let your doctor know your findings.

Age-Related Forgetfulness

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) reminds older adults mild forgetfulness is more often a normal part of aging and not a serious memory problem. They explain serious problems generally involving things like the person asking the same question over and over again and getting lost in places they know well. They may also have trouble following recipes or directions and find themselves confused about people, places and time.

If you are someone who is forgetting things, there are some steps you can take to feel more confident. These involve several simple things you can do, which will benefit your whole being like getting enough sleep (seven to eight hours a night), not drinking a lot of alcohol; and exercising and eating well. Managing high blood pressure is also important.

Other more practical tips to help with forgetfulness are putting your wallet or purse, keys, glasses and phone in the same place each day. Instead of assuming you will remember, write out shopping and need to-do lists and use a calendar or take notes. NIA says to get involved in activities that focus on using the mind and body and stay socially involved. If you feel depressed for weeks at a time, talk to your doctor.

Strategies to improve forgetfulness include challenging our brains by learning new things as well as using all our senses. For example, prepare a new recipe that requires lots of spices. If you are eating out, try to identify the flavors and seasonings used in the meal. To help remember new information better such as names, places, etc., try repeating it out loud or writing it down as this reinforces the memory. For example, if you want to remember a new neighbor’s name, say it out loud back to them, like “hi Jack.” Then an hour or so later say the new neighbor’s name out loud again.

At MorningStar of Happy Valley we promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle, while providing comfort and security. Our beautiful home has 61 stylish assisted living suites with a choice of floor plans. In addition, 27 secure suites in our Reflections Neighborhood are devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Gum Disease May Increase the Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease

Researchers at Tuft University reported a link between gum disease, also known as periodontitis and periodontal disease, to an increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Periodontitis is a bacterial infection within the soft tissue of the mouth, and “about 47.2% of U.S. adults over 30 and 70% over 65 have gum disease,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The study, which was done with mice, discovered the correlation, but researchers hope the findings can be used to someday help reduce cases of Alzheimer’s disease. The authors cite Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum), a bacterium that causes gum disease and is already linked to kidney disease, diabetes and coronary problems to be the problem.

The lead author, Dr. Jake Jinkun Chen, professor of periodontology and director of the Division of Oral Biology at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine explains the purpose of the study is to identify and characterize the association of induced periodontal disease with Alzheimer’s disease. He says as F. nucleatum generates “inflammation both locally and systemically, it affects the Alzheimer’s disease phenotype, as Alzheimer’s itself is an inflammatory disease.” Additionally, since the bacteria migrate and penetrate the brain, it can worsen the symptoms and signs of Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers plan further studies in humans and say although there is not a proven link yet; good oral health benefits our overall health. They also say to decrease our risk for Alzheimer’s, it is important to maintain a healthy diet and exercise.

As Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases progress, a loved one may need more care than they can get living at home. When the time comes for memory care, we encourage you to consider MorningStar of Happy Valley, a senior living community offering specialized care for individuals with memory impairment diseases. Our holistic approach is guided by our signature program, Lavender Sky, and we help residents and their families navigate this challenging journey with love and compassion. Convenient Senior Living Community Located in Rio Rancho, NM

For many seniors, transitioning to senior living in Rio Rancho can make a world of difference in their quality of life. Assisted living means seniors have less responsibility, more time to do things they enjoy, and convenient access to everything they need.

This article will discuss a few of the convenient amenities seniors can expect in assisted living.

On-Site Dining

One of the biggest responsibilities of living alone as a senior is cooking. Cooking can take a lot of time and effort between grocery shopping and staying on top of nutritional needs. In senior living, residents have access to delicious meals every day, and no grocery shopping or cooking is required.

Meals are always prepared with nutrition in mind, and the cooking staff can accommodate any dietary restrictions or needs.

Maintenance and Housekeeping

Another reason seniors explore transitioning to senior living is because of the hassle of housework. Home maintenance, such as landscaping and upkeep, in addition to routine housekeeping, can eat into valuable retirement time.

In assisted living, all maintenance is taken care of, and regular housekeeping services are offered. Seniors can live stress-free without worrying about their yard, roof, or anything in between.

Medical Care

It is a natural part of life that medical needs grow as seniors get older. Traveling to and from doctor appointments can be a pain and deter some seniors from getting the care they need. In assisted living, medical staff is conveniently located onsite to administer medical care of all types.

Rotating doctors are also available to complete wellness checks and regularly check in with residents. With medical care so close, seniors don’t have to worry about traveling to doctor appointments.

Social Activities

One of the most important things seniors can do for their physical and mental health is to stay social. As seniors age, getting around to different social activities can become more difficult. In a senior living community, residents always have access to social activities just steps from their door.

Whether it is organized events like game night or a book club or taking an afternoon to catch up over a cup of coffee, residents always feel like they are truly part of a community. Best of all, they don’t have to drive across town or take a bus just to see their friends, as many activities are hosted right on site.

Welcome Home to Convenient Senior Living

The last thing seniors should be doing during retirement is spending it on chores and daily responsibilities. Seniors can drastically reduce their daily responsibilities by moving to a senior living community. A move to senior living gives residents the convenience they deserve during their hard-earned retirement years.

Be an Active Partner in Your Medical Care

A National Institute of Health survey found patients who were most satisfied with their healthcare were those engaged in self-advocacy. This included a person becoming knowledgeable about their injury and health care needs; and being persistent about speaking up for those needs. The NIH also explains those who felt better about their experience practiced communication skills, were organized, talked to peer mentors and kept a positive attitude.

Research shows practicing self-advocacy, or when a family member actively advocates on the behalf of a loved one, reduces medical errors in hospital settings, doctors’ offices or at the pharmacy. It is important as the World Health Organization reports “an estimated 10% of patients in high-income countries are harmed while receiving hospital care.” Also according to a 2021 report in StatPearls, “medical errors result in about 100,000 deaths in hospitals and clinics annually.”

Most errors are related to diagnoses, prescriptions and use of medicines; and misdiagnoses means delayed treatment and taking the wrong medicines. To ensure the best care you need to be honest with your healthcare provider. This includes providing an account of your symptoms and a list of current prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbs, supplements and vitamins you take. Be sure to let them know if you have any drug allergies and provide as complete a medical history as you can including your personal medical record as well as that of your family’s. In addition let your medical team know if you are a smoker and the amount of alcohol you consume.

Additionally remember the time you spend with your doctor is short, so prepare beforehand the things you wish to discuss. The Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute Center for Diagnostic Excellence at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore has a QuestionBuilder app available by AHRQ at Google Play or the Apple store to guide you in questions you should ask.

Experts also say to remember you and your doctor are a team. Being your own health advocate or that of a loved one means helping them follow the medical advice recommended by the doctor regarding diet, rest, exercise, smoking and alcohol use and taking meds as prescribed.

If you are looking for senior living, please visit MorningStar of Happy Valley. We provide area seniors trusted assisted living and memory care with a wide array of amenities, care services and wellness programs and activities. Please visit our website.

An Assessment of the ADLs can Help Seniors Get the Care they Need

Most seniors wish to maintain their independence as long as possible by living on their own; and this is why many who encounter problems in their day-to-day lives are reluctant to tell their families. The problem with this is as a
senior starts to have more difficulty caring for themselves, their quality of life can be greatly diminished.
Even if mom or dad seem to be doing well on their own, experts say a rapid decline in their health from an accident or illness can catch families by surprise and make living on their own dangerous. In addition many health conditions affect musculoskeletal, neurological, circulatory or sensory systems and impact a senior’s ability to perform the activities of daily living (ADLs). Experts say other factors indicating a need for more help include social isolation, medication side effects and the physical characteristics of the person’s home such as a second floor bedroom. If after implementing a series of home modifications is not adequate, more measures need to be taken to keep your loved one safe.

Experts explain unmet ADLs can lead to serious health problems including “malnutrition, poor personal hygiene, isolation, illnesses like urinary tract infections (UTIs) and falls. In fact, studies show ADL disabilities are associated with an increased risk for mortality; and taking care of daily needs can help prevent new and worsening health problems.” They also report if family members notice a decline in a loved one’s overall health, taking steps now can improve their safety and forestall further problems. One solution is to make a move to a senior living community, where a person can live as safely and as independently as possible. To ensure needs are met, homes use the ADLs as a measure of a person’s functional performance.

MorningStar of Happy Valley is a beautiful senior living community with 61 private assisted living suites in a variety of configurations and floorplans offering residents’ peace of mind knowing compassionate help is readily available whenever they need it. We also have 27 secure suites devoted to the specialized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.  Visit our website to learn about our home and our Move-in Specials.

Making Family Memories More Relevant for the Younger Generation

 Picture

Let’s face it; while our grandchildren may love to hear funny stories of when we were kids, most are not interested in looking at piles of pictures of people they have never met, or going through old scrapbooks or diaries of people long past.  However historians and biographers alike say we should try and keep our family’s history from getting lost as it often contains important life lesson about getting through good times as well as bad.

As one of the researchers behind the study “The Power of Family History in Adolescent Identity and Well-Being,” Robyn Fivush, Ph.D., explains, “our families are among the most important social groups we belong to and identify with, stories about our family tell us who we are in the world, and who we should be."  One way to make our ancestors seem more relevant to our grandchildren is to point out common interests and goals they had.

You might want to start by having old 8 mm and 16 mm movie films and videotapes of the family converted to new formats to make them easier to share.  There are many companies that will convert them well as do some editing to make them more enjoyable.  In addition take advantage of apps that allow you to organize pictures and arrange them into timelines that can be viewed over your smart device, or print a book of the most memorable photos of great-grandparents and others.  And remember even if the younger generation doesn’t seem interested in their family history today, they may change their mind as they grow older.

As the finest senior living in Rio Rancho, MorningStar of Rio Rancho provides a safe, loving home for seniors who require a little assistance with daily living activities.  In addition to the area’s best assisted living, we also provide compassionate memory care.  Please contact us to learn more about our philosophy of care, our broad range of services, and pricing and availability.

Looking for Assisted Living for a Loved One in the Happy Valley, OR Area?

 Picture

MorningStar of Happy Valley wants to reassure families considering assisted living that if they put their loved ones into our home, we will see to it they receive the care they need.  Before the resident even moves in, our Wellness Director, who is also a registered nurse, will meet with the family to thoroughly discuss the person’s medical history, current health condition, medications, and personal preferences.  In addition, we regularly review, evaluate, and update care plans to ensure changing needs are addressed.

As a family member, some of your concerns may be focused on your parent or loved one’s medications especially if they have had problems taking them on time, all the time, or incorrectly.  If you want to know if we offer medication management, the answer is yes, and we also offer pharmacy services.  We consider medication management to be an important service to our residents as we know many seniors with chronic health conditions take several prescription medications daily, which can result in missed or improper dosages.

Your initial meeting with our Wellness Director is also a good time to discuss concerns such as a parent who has been losing weight recently and who may not be eating properly.  Or it may be you worry they are not drinking enough fluids each day.  We have an answer to both problems as our 5-star meal service is designed to be both nutritional as well as to temp the appetite of our most discerning residents.  To help keep our residents hydrated, we make sure their have plenty of opportunities to drink throughout the day.

Along with our compassionate care services and resort-style amenities, residents have a choice of well-designed floorplans that are sure to meet a variety of preferences and needs.  Within our 61 assisted living suites, we offer floorplans that include studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom configurations with some over 900 sq. ft.  You will find all of our suites have high ceilings, large windows, wall-to-wall carpeting and mini blinds and all that is missing to make it home is your own furnishings and personal items.  Moreover, if you are wondering, we are pet friendly!

Currently we are safely accepting new residents, and are confident in our protocols and procedures in fighting the coronavirus (COVID-19).  As the nation slowly reopens, MorningStar of Happy Valley is judiciously following Oregon’s guidance in terms of phasing and pacing.   Please visit our website for more information about our loving senior living community.

Avoiding Too Much Sugar in Your Diet

Picture

We all may be eating and drinking foods we consider to be healthy but they may contain far more sugar than we think they do.  It can even happen with foods we do not necessarily think of as sweet such as ketchup or barbeque sauce.  Also making what we assume is the healthier choice like “low fat” or “light” yogurt may actually contain more sugar than the regular variety.  Some low-fat yogurt has over 30 grams of sugar; and the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends men consume no more than 9 teaspoons (36 grams or 150 calories) of added sugar per day. For women, the amount is just 6 teaspoons (25 grams or 100 calories) per day.

Another food we think of as healthy is granola.  While it is true that the main ingredient is rolled oats, which provides protein, healthy fats and fiber, it also can be loaded with lots of sugar and calories.  This is where label reading can help as the Washington Post did a story on granolas and found a single serving can range from one gram of sugar to 14 grams.  Another thing to look for are the words “added sugar” as the sugar from dried fruit is not bad for us (more calories for those watching) as is corn syrup or cane sugar.  However, do keep in mind that while honey, maple syrup, and coconut sugar may be healthier, they still add empty calories.

Drinks such as sugared ice teas and flavored coffees also add a lot of sugar to our diets as do some sport drinks and vitamin waters so be sure to read the label.  If you want to avoid empty sugary drinks altogether, make flavored waters by adding fruit or vegetable slices.  Toss in some lime and cucumber slices to your water or a handful of berries, orange slices, or mint leaves; use your imagination.

Isolated Seniors are at Risk for a Range of Health Problems

morningstar general 12
Studies show that socialization is a key component to a senior’s overall health and can help to reduce stress and anxiety and maintain cognitive health as well as improve longevity.  Conversely older adults who are isolated have been found to be more at risk for a range of health problems including cardiovascular disease and depression.

Researchers also found that the more social a person is the more likely they are to exercise on a regular basis.  This is important as older adults are susceptible to a number of health conditions, including osteoporosis, heart trouble, cancer and chronic illnesses that can benefit from exercise. In addition, daily exercise can prevent muscles and bones from deteriorating in old age.  A good way for older adults to exercise is at a community class designed for seniors as you have the opportunity to socialize and to stay motivated.

Offering the best in senior living communities, MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care of Fountain Hills provides a healthy lifestyle designed around comfort, wellness and community.  Our mission is to care for residents’ physical, emotional, spiritual and wellness needs within a loving, secure setting.
