Learning to Use Technology Can Have Many Benefits!

While some older adults may be reluctant to learn how to use digital technology, studies show more seniors are feeling comfortable with it. For incidence, the number of adults aged 65 years and older who own smartphones has risen 24 percentage points (up from 18% to 42%) since 2013. However that number is considerably lower for adults in their mid-70s and older. Smartphone adoption drops off considerably among adults in their mid-70s and beyond. The amount of senior from 75 to 79 who own a smartphone is only 31%, and for those 80 and older it is only 17%.

In terms of the Internet, seniors use has risen steadily over the last decade and a half. The Pew Research Center first began tracking Internet adoption in early 2000, and at that time “just 14% of seniors were internet users.” They report that today, “67% of adults ages 65 and older say they go online.” Technology is also being used to monitor and manage the health status of seniors.

Some seniors say the Internet helps them to feel more capable and connected to the wider community as well as to their family and friends. Messages can be sent instantly and a senior can see their loved ones’ faces using FaceTime or Skype.

In addition technology can be informative and entertaining and offers plenty of ways to keep minds active and engaged. At our MorningStar of Rio Rancho community, we will offer resort-style amenities and services as well as a wide range of wellness programs and activities. We will also offer iN2L Technology, which is designed to help residents stay active and connected. The state-of-the-art system combines touchscreen computers with intuitive, picture-based software.
